Overview

Marine Biology students will measure the impact of ocean temperature and ocean acidification on the growth of seaweed and marine animals while on the Boston Harbor Islands. They will venture out to survey the rocky shores of Georges Island, and document the invasive species fouling the dock pilings.

Did you know that about 70% of the atmosphere’s oxygen comes from the ocean? Or that great white sharks are heading back to the Cape?

The ocean contains 99% of living space on the planet, and less than 10% of that space has been explored. Come explore the ocean, its plants, and its animals this summer with Boston Leadership Institute.

In past years, students have visited Northeastern University's Marine Science Center in Nahant, MA. They’ve witnessed marine animal surgery at the New England Aquarium, visited the Boston Harbor Islands, and identified different whale species on a Whale Watch. Marine Biology students have attended the Marine Science Center at Northeastern University's College of Science and had a chance to learn from top researchers in a beautifully maintained marine environment. This pre-college program culminates in individual research papers and presentations. This program is great for gifted teens who love marine biology.
