    Overview

The one-week Introduction to Surgery program will present students with basic surgical skills, such as surgical knot tying and suturing, and then allow them to translate these skills to mock surgeries.

Cardiovascular diseases and surgical procedures will be focused on this week, including coronary artery bypass grafting.  Students will additionally complete, in groups, a slideshow presentation involving cardiothoracic diseases and their surgical treatments. They will then practice their presenting skills as they present their work to the rest of the class.

This one-week summer program is designed for teens interested in pre-med.

    • "I really liked the dissections and surgeries we did in the afternoon. In addition, it was so cool that we learned how to suture. To me, learning via lecture-style presentation is helpful, so I enjoyed that. Our teachers were very good at explaining the material and teaching us."

    • "I enjoyed the Intro to Surgery program. I learned more in this one week than I would in a week at my school. I also had many opportunities to practice dissections and even surgeries that I would not have had without this program. I am grateful for this opportunity and for our teacher who put a lot of work into the program."

    • "The program was amazing and I learned so much! Even from a background in biology and chemistry I still learned a whole lot. My favorite part was performing the surgeries and getting to dissect all kinds of organisms and organs. The teachers explained the procedures well and explained the purpose as well."
