The Boston Leadership Institute is an award-winning summer program for high-achieving teens. Since 2011, BLI has provided unique, engaging, and valuable opportunities to thousands of students from around the United States and the world. Led by highly qualified and decorated teachers and professors from the Boston area, the BLI lineup now covers Healthcare. The subject matter is challenging and exciting, and students gain important credentials to include on college applications.
Our program offerings include:
This unit will cover heart anatomy and physiology, via examination of the heart, and a study of the impact of exercise on cardiovascular function. Students will learn the basics of CPR and will learn about heart healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices.
Students will learn about the various kinds of infectious diseases that exist, the transmission and contamination process, as well as differentiating between viruses, pathogens, worms, and bacteria. They will observe how these diseases have evolved over the course of time in terms of severity, resistance to methods of eradication, and become familiar with different strains and species of these diseases. Join us for this exciting pre-med summer program.
After the basics, students learn how to take and interpret radiographs, learning how to identify abnormalities. Someone is in pain – can you determine why? Do you ever get self conscious when your dentist whips out your chart? What are they looking at?! You’ll be given your own “patients” and learn to examine their dental history. Have they been keeping up with their oral hygiene? Have they been brushing their teeth twice a day? What about flossing? These are all things you’ll be able to determine!
Cardiovascular diseases and surgical procedures will be focused on this week, including coronary artery bypass grafting. Students will additionally complete, in groups, a slideshow presentation involving cardiothoracic diseases and their surgical treatments. They will then practice their presenting skills as they present their work to the rest of the class. This one-week summer program is designed for teens interested in pre-med.
Nursing - Imagine it. YOU are a nurse. You are on the front lines. Maybe you respond to codes in the Emergency Room or comfort family members at your patient’s bedside. Maybe you’ve become a Nurse Practitioner and prescribe medication. If you feel a call to nursing, listen to it! Aside from being one of the highest paying careers – with a MEDIAN income in the high $70,000 range – nurses are needed right now.
So what will you do in this program? When studying the roles of a clinical nurse, you might learn to execute MRIs and X-Rays and evaluate vital signs. When studying the day of a critical care nurse, you may turn to more urgent tasks that are life or death. Have you gotten a shot recently? That was likely done by a nurse. You’ll learn how to be THAT nurse who doesn’t leave your patient’s arm sore. You’ll also learn how to insert intravenous lines, an everyday task for most nurses in a hospital setting.
After this, we’ll move on to more specific specialties. maybe you’ll even find one you want to pursue! We’ll go from top to bottom, starting with Neuroscience. The nervous system, spinal cord, degenerative diseases – we’ll cover it all! What is Alzheimer’s? You’ve heard that mental health and physical health are similar, and we’ll explore how. After this, we’ll get down to the heart. Did you know your heart beats 115,000 times and pumps 2,000 gallons per day?! But what can go wrong? How does someone end up on the path to a heart attack? Imagine you’re a cardiothoracic surgeon. A patient needs a bypass. What happens next?!
We’ll continue through the body, covering orthopedics, oncology, genetic diseases, and more. This will be a fast-paced and hands-on experience. This is going to be a popular program.
