This one-week Introduction to Surgery program will present students with basic surgical skills, such as surgical knot tying and suturing, and then allow them to translate these skills to mock surgeries.
Intro to Surgery allows students to learn basic surgical skills in a fun, academic environment. Activities include performing mock surgeries on a pig specimen, and practicing suturing and surgical knot-tying. Students will learn how to stabilize the patient by blocking a vein or by performing an emergency tracheotomy, and will work through ways of determining which surgical procedures must be done immediately and which can wait until the patient is stabilized. This program is great for students who are interested in majoring in pre-med.
Cost and Session Information
There are three sessions of this one-week program. The sessions will run from June 15-June 19, July 13-17, and July 20-24, 2020.

"I enjoyed the Intro to Surgery program. I learned more in this one week than I would in a week at my school. I also had many opportunities to practice dissections and even surgeries that I would not have had without this program. I am grateful for this opportunity and for our teacher who put a lot of work into the program."
"I liked how hands-on the activities were and how friendly and easy to talk to our instructor was. I loved doing the mock surgeries and practicing stitching on the fake skin. I also liked learning about surgical techniques- this is, after all, intro to surgery."
"My program introduced me to new surgeries and taught me skills, such as suturing, that will benefit me on my path to being a doctor. My teacher was very knowledgeable about the topics we discussed and explained everything thoroughly."
"The program was amazing and I learned so much! Even from a background in biology and chemistry I still learned a whole lot. My favorite part was performing the surgeries and getting to dissect all kinds of organisms and organs. The teachers explained the procedures well and explained the purpose as well."
“In the intro to surgery program we did dissections and learned how to suture. I liked the dissections and the teachers were very nice and made the class fun.”

“I really liked the dissections and surgeries we did in the afternoon. In addition, it was so cool that we learned how to suture. To me, learning via lecture-style presentation is helpful, so I enjoyed that. Our teachers were very good at explaining the material and teaching us.”
