Explore the world of veterinary medicine at UMass Amherst’s two-week Pre-Veterinary Medicine Summer Pre-College program. Designed for rising juniors and seniors, this hands-on experience covers animal handling, anatomy, diagnostic imaging, and more—offering students a true look into the academic and professional path toward becoming a veterinarian.
UMass Amherst’s Pre-Veterinary Medicine Summer Pre-College program immerses rising high school juniors and seniors in the study and practice of veterinary medicine. Over two weeks, students explore the veterinary profession through short lectures, discussions, and hands-on modules at the UMass Amherst campus and University farms. Participants gain experience with sheep, goats, beef cattle, and horses while studying comparative anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, clinical pathology, and diagnostic imaging.
Students will learn animal handling and restraint techniques, perform basic physical assessments, and even conduct a trans-abdominal reproductive ultrasound on a sheep. The course also helps students understand the educational and experiential steps needed to become competitive veterinary school applicants.
Field trips, academic games, and team presentations complement the academic work. Due to the physical nature of the program, students must submit a notarized Liability Release Form and bring appropriate attire, including washable rubber boots. Applicants must submit a letter of interest and a letter of recommendation addressing readiness for this intensive learning experience.
