This course is designed to help students develop the skills necessary to become active and engaged community leaders by exploring the cultural, political and historical context of social movements in the United States. Participants will examine on-going social movements such as the Civil Rights movement, labor movement, environmental activism, women’s movement etc. and develop a basic understanding of their origins and outcomes.  This course is more than a history lesson in social change. It encourages mature reflection, active discussion, and personal growth. Students should come prepared to engage in thoughtful, positive and meaningful dialogue with peers, faculty, and guest speakers. Participants will receive an introduction to implementing social change in a collaborative and service oriented way by exploring LMU’s core values and finding out what it means to truly be “men and women for and with others.”
