    Overview

Carpe Diem Education’s UK and the Netherlands semester gets you off the mainstream path as you explore the heart of Northern Europe while connecting you to inspiring people and getting you to think about your own journey as a change maker.  By focusing on the resilience and regeneration of communities and the land, we learn not only about the current problems,  but also the proactive and life-affirming ways that we can overcome challenges.

While relatively small, these nations have had a profound impact on the modern world. Shaped by their relationship to the water, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands are seafaring regions that have exported their ways of life through development around the world. On this Carpe Diem journey, we'll explore how these traditional nations now strive to be inclusive to the multicultural communities who call these regions home.

The UK and the Netherlands provide a rich tapestry and landscape to explore history, the impacts of colonialism, climate change, and many other challenges facing our societies today through a solutions-based focus. Engage with communities proactively seeking holistic and sustainable solutions to some of the world's greatest challenges.

From the renowned and bustling cities of London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Amsterdam to the countryside - this program takes you off the beaten path and connects you to meaningful exchange in the UK & the Netherlands.

    Program Highlights:

    • London Calling: Spend a week in this fast-paced multicultural city, with activities taking you to various neighborhoods to explore challenging topics such as multiculturalism and sustainability.
    • Mystical Scotland: Spend an evening in Edinburgh before embarking on a two-night trek in legendary Scotland.

    • My time in Morocco and Spain was truly life changing. I am so grateful I had this opportunity was opened to me and that I made the decision to step out of my comfort zone to do it. I gained so much confidence and a stronger desire of adventure and discovery for the world around me. One of the best experiences was my time in the small town Ait Ourir. The community welcomed us to their town and made me feel like I was right at home. I had a blast every second and was able to make some friendships there that I believe will last a lifetime. I also loved our time spent in the Atlas mountains. When we stayed in the rural villages I had the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of simple and traditional living with more amazing children and families. It was a great transition from Morocco to Spain as we came near the end of the trip. Like any move it was a bit of an adjustment but it was great as it felt more like home. I was able to really enjoy the beauty of the Spanish culture when we watched Flamenco dancing and was in homestays in town for the celebration of Easter in the city. I have always loved hiking. My time in both Spain and Morocco was filled with memorable hikes and adventures with breathtaking views and stories along the way. I am so grateful I was able to get my adventure fix every day during my travels that pushed me out of my comfort zone and made for incredible memories.

    • The three months I spent travelling throughout Spain and Morocco left me with some of the most amazing experiences of my life and more than a few stories to tell. I've seen some truly breathtaking things after this trip and I enjoyed them all with a group of friends that were an absolute joy to be around. During this trip I was constantly learning and experiencing things that challenged me and pushed me to grow, whether I was learning Arabic, haggling with a street vendor, or waiting out a sandstorm in a woven tent, I was always engaged in something vastly different than what I'm used to. I'm glad I had the opportunity to be involved in a trip as lively and exciting as this one, and I'm really happy that I could enjoy it with such a fun, and supportive group of friends. This trip is fast paced and a little crazy at times. While I never felt like I was being pushed too hard, or was in any real danger, I'd definitely recommend this program to those who are looking to take a few steps out of their comfort zone.
