Projects Abroad is one of the largest volunteer abroad organizations in the world. Founded in 1992, we send over 10,000 people abroad each year on a variety of service projects and internships overseas.
Projects Abroad has hundreds of different volunteer opportunities in almost thirty countries. You can choose where you go, what you do and for how long you want to stay. The only requirements are that you be at least sixteen years old and provide a reference, either a teacher or coworker that we can contact on your behalf. We recommend that you begin planning your trip at least three months in advance, but we can usually accommodate your plans even if you apply later. Projects Abroad programs are perfect for anyone looking to take a gap year and explore new cultures before starting college, though are programs can also accommodate older volunteers looking to take a semester off, professionals looking to take a break from their career, or even families!
In addition to our regular programs, we also have volunteer programs desined specifically for recent high school graduates looking to take a gap year. the Global Gap program through Projects Abroad is an innovative 27 week volunteer program for students taking a gap year before university who want a far ranging international experience that spans three continents, five countries and twelve different service opportunities. The Global Gap is a unique program that offers a small and tight-knit group of volunteers the chance to experience a variety of different cultures together and gain experience in different fields. By offering immersion opportunities in local communities around the globe, the Global Gap program offers a unique opportunity to explore the world, learn about important global issues and help out on worthwhile volunteer projects. The program consists of a one week orientation program in Accra, the capital city of Ghana, followed by one-to-two month programs in each of South Africa, Peru, India, and Thailand. In each of these countries, volunteers will work closely with our local staff members on different service projects that lend insight into important issues in developing countries like housing, education, environmental conservation, and human rights.
If you want to volunteer abroad but don't think a gap year is the right fit for you, Projects Abroad also has shorter summer trips designed specifically for high school students and recent high school graduates, and are open to students 16 to 19 years old.
