    Overview

This summer experience ecological science in action. You will step away from the classroom and into an ecotoxicology lab, designing and conducting a unique project in ecotoxicology covering experimental design, data collection, and analysis. This ecotoxicology lab teaches you how to conduct science based on soil ecology and ecotoxicology.

The Stony Brook University Pre-College Summer — Environmental Science in the Earth Worm Lab is designed for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in learning more about ecological science in action. In this experiential program, you will step away from traditional textbook science and learn hands-on about ecotoxicology research. You will gain experience in designing and conducting unique scientific experiments, immersing yourself in the entire process in a laboratory environment. To put scientific thinking into action, you will partake in hands-on experiences through:

    • Setting up an experiment to answer an environmental science question.
    • Collecting data
    • Interpreting the data
    • Develop experiments using invertebrates (earthworms or flatworms) and/or plants.
    • Use technology that measures soil respiration or plant chlorophyll concentrations.

At the end of the week, you’ll apply what you’ve learned by working with teammates to create an interprofessional care plan that integrates the information and skills you’ve gained.
