Costa Rica Summer Program:
Spend the summer in Costa Rica with a group of eleven other students and two experienced leaders! You will have the chance to practice your Spanish and to learn more about environmental conservation and sustainability. Previous Spanish experience is not required.
During the first week of the program, students will have an opportunity to learn how to be responsible international travelers, spend time hiking in the rainforest, swimming in the beautiful Sarapiqui River, and even have a chance to soar through the trees on a canopy zipline. During the second week, students will study Spanish with local teachers in small groups and spend the afternoon hiking, swimming, and whitewater rafting! The group will then head to the Nicoya Peninsula where they will learn more about organic farming and participate in a sea turtle conservation project. The program ends up a final retreat where students have a chance to reflect on their experiences and prepare to return home.
Program highlights include: Hike through the rainforest while staying at an eco-retreat by a river. Study Spanish with local teachers in a lovely river valley, taking time over the weekend to raft the Rio Pacuare. Learn about permaculture while working on an organic farm on Costa Rica’s pacific coast. Engage in service-learning by supporting sea turtle conservation and wildlife monitoring efforts on the Nicoya Peninsula. Participate in a private retreat as you wrap up the program and prepare to return home!
Ecuador Summer Program:
Spend the summer in Ecuador with eleven other students and two experienced leaders! Immerse yourself in diverse cultures and awe-inspiring landscapes while exploring Spanish and conservation. No previous Spanish experience is required!
We’ll visit farms that focus on local production and international export and tackle the following questions: - What factors do families and farmers consider when deciding how and what to farm? - What does sustainable farming mean to different individuals and communities? - How do different communities—on the coast, in the Amazon, and in the highlands—work to conserve the natural environment and still thrive economically? - How is the impact of COVID-19 in Ecuador similar or different in the US? Program highlights include: Immerse yourself in the Ecuadorian culture by living on a family farm, helping with the banana harvest, sorting, packing, and other activities.
Study Spanish with local teachers in the friendly community of Baños, known for its hot springs, waterfalls, and access to outdoor adventure. Engage in service-learning by supporting river turtle conservation and riverbank restoration efforts in the Amazon rainforest. Master travel skills that will help you travel the world on your own in the future! Explore local waterfalls and swimming holes with your group as well as enjoy other fun activities like hiking, cooking Ecuadorian dishes, and playing sports.
