We’re thrilled to offer our usual programming, redesigned as a week of synchronous, dynamic and participatory online learning, sharing, and community building in the Juniper Young Writers Online (JYWO) program July 20-24, 2020.
At the JYWO program, young writers of diverse backgrounds, life experiences, and writing styles come together to find inspiration and to be a part of a community of creative peers. Over the course of five days, participants will engage with their instructors and peers in the pursuit of wild invention.
There are several ways to participate. You can choose to apply for the full program ($900), or register for one of two writing packages (costs vary).
What does the online institute include?
The full program includes Writing Labs with instructor feedback, Craft Sessions to explore different writing styles and genres, Participant Readings for you to share your work with peers, asynchronous Write-alongs, and Writer’s Life Talk where you can hear about behind-the-scenes processes of your writing instructors. If you would like to be a part of the small workshop environment in the full program, you can apply here. You can also choose some of these options in our writing packages and register directly here.
Can anyone participate?
The Juniper Young Writers Online program is for students currently in grades 8 through 12. If you are an adult writer, you can check out more information on the 2021 Juniper Summer Writing Institute here.

Will I receive feedback on my writing?
If you participate in the full program, you will be placed in a Writing Lab that is capped at 10 participants and meets every day during the week. During this time you will receive small-group informal feedback, and at the end of the week you will receive written feedback from your instructor.
How small are classes?
Writing Labs are capped at 10, and Participant Readings are only for full-program participants. Craft sessions are capped at 30. Writer’s Life Talks have larger caps and are in a webinar format. Write-alongs are asynchronous, with just you and the material!
How much does it cost?
The writing packages range from $200-$400, and the full program, which is the only option that includes Writing Lab and Participant Readings, is $900. More information on cost, payment plans, and deposits can be found here.
Is it live or can I do it on my own time?
With the exception of Writing Labs and Participant Readings, all JYWO sessions will be available to registered participants as recordings 48 hours after the sessions run. The Write-alongs are designed to be self-directed, and will drop at midnight and noon each day of the program.
Do I need to apply?
You can register for one of two writing packages offered, no application necessary! If you’d like to be considered for participation in the full program, you must submit an application. Application materials include a 5-7 page creative writing sample, and a brief writer’s statement.
