    Overview

Campers will explore light using the Project Lead the Way Launch module "Light: Observing the Sun, Moon, and Stars" - which focuses on hands-on learning and collaboration with peers.

Campers will create a device that will protect them from ultraviolet radiation, learn about how light and sound travel over distances, and explore the stars in the Kummer Center for STEM Education's planetarium!

    *This day camp has daily drop-off between 12:30–1:00 p.m., and pick-up between 4:30–5:00 p.m. *

Space is Limited: Early registration is recommended. Campers will be registered on a first-come, first-served basis, based upon date of registration and when payment is received. Waiting lists will be maintained and filled in the order that they were received should cancellations occur.

    Camp Activities:

    • Campers will create a Sun Tracker that will be used to observe patterns in light throughout the day
    • Compasses will also be introduced and used to help evaluate patterns
    • Observing patterns is a skill scientists use daily and so your camper will become an actual scientist in this activity
    • UV rays will be explored through UV-sensitive beads
    • Campers will get the chance to make their own bracelets and then “test” them in the sunlight to see the effects of UV rays
    • Students will design and build a model of a playground to provide shelter from harmful UV rays
    • They will get the opportunity to test their models with the UV-sensitive beads and a UV flashlight to determine the effectiveness of their design
    • Campers will get to observe stars in a blow-up planetarium where we will also get to watch a movie “under the stars”
