    Overview

In this intensive program, students will explore theme park history, and the evolution of the relationship between moving image media (film, television, and video games) and theme parks.

In this two-week intensive program, students explore the dynamic relationship between theme parks and the moving image through guided visits to Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Universal Studios Hollywood, and Warner Bros. Studios. Combining lectures, screenings, discussions, guest speakers, and immersive site visits, the program offers students a unique opportunity to gain firsthand insight into the creative and cultural forces driving themed entertainment.

As part of the program, students live in UCLA’s dorms, immersing themselves in campus life while enjoying the beauty of UCLA and the energy of Los Angeles—the entertainment capital of the world.

UCLA Emerging Filmmakers Media Parks explores the historical and cultural connections between theme parks and screen media, examines the theoretical, industrial, and cultural issues surrounding them, and analyzes how these two forms of entertainment influence and shape each other in today’s media landscape.

In class, students immerse themselves in research, analysis, and lively discussion, exploring case studies of rides and themed lands through scholarly texts, reference films, television shows, and video games. This academic foundation prepares them for the next step—bringing theory to life through firsthand experience.

Beyond the classroom, students deepen their understanding with guided visits to Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Universal Studios Hollywood, and Warner Bros. Studios. Each site visit includes a behind-the-scenes lecture, offering insight into how storytelling and design converge to create immersive experiences.

The program also features interactive Q&A sessions with industry professionals, offering a rare look into the creative and technical sides of themed entertainment. Guest speakers are booked based on professional availability and are subject to change. Past speakers have included Disney Imagineers, executives in Creative & Interactive Experiences, cast members, and concept artists who share their real-world insight into bringing theme park rides and experiences to life.

UCLA Emerging Filmmakers will receive a certificate of completion at the conclusion of the program.

Due to the intensive nature of the program, a maximum of one excused program absence is permitted.
