Merchant Marine: The Maritime Academies Recently Updated

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, located in Kings Point, New York, is the federal institution responsible for training merchant mariner officers. Students earn a bachelor’s degree in three years on campus, plus one year of immersive at-sea training. Admission to USMMA’s rigorous program requires a congressional nomination and graduates leave with leadership credentials, professional licenses, and multiple career options on land and at sea.

State Maritime Academies

The six state-supported academies offer four-year maritime programs without needing congressional approval. Each combines classroom instruction with onboard training, giving students the technical skills and credentials to become licensed Merchant Mariners and commissioned military officers.
