Human Nutrition in the Pre-College Summer Program will give you an edge on health and a preview of nutrition that can impact a nation. If you have ever thought about health and how to improve the health of humans, a foundation in nutrition is essential.
We have a summer in Storrs for you!
UConn's Pre-College Summer Human Nutrition and Health course provides high school students the opportunity explore the science behind modern nutrition at a nationally ranked public university campus.
Where will you be in five years?
That’s a hard question to answer, especially for high school students. UConn’s Pre-College Summer can help students figure it out. Offered during Session 3, our Human Nutrition and Health course serves as an introduction to the field of nutritional science. During the week, we will discuss how the human body turns food into energy, whether there is any scientific evidence supporting fad diets, and how nutrition and health are linked. We will have in-class activities, short video-clips, and lively discussions about how nutrition (and the science of nutrition) plays a role in obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. There will also be hands-on lab experiences.
We will also discuss:
- The methods of nutritional science including epidemiology, human nutrition studies, and molecular nutrition/nutrigenomics
- The impact of nutritional science in society
- Food culture and security
This course is designed for students interested in pursuing a career in nutrition, food science, medicine, public health, social justice, or any career in the health sciences. Careers opportunities in the field of human nutrition will be provided.
The Department of Nutritional Sciences also offers a Pre-College Summer course “Food Science and Technology”, which is closely related to this course.
