Summer at HPA offers students entering grades 6-12 a unique four-week boarding experience structured for academic enrichment and designed to make the most of summer and take advantage of our wondrous island - home to 80 percent of the world's ecosystems.

Green Chemistry (Credit Course)
Earn 0.5 credit upon successful completion of this seminar.
How safe is your bath soap? Shampoo? Your skin care products? Green Chemistry is a revolutionary science focused on creating safe, energy-efficient, non-toxic products. Learn the principles of Green Chemistry, and explore the various green chemistry applications found throughout industries, including those right here on the island of Hawai'i. Students will apply what they learn to identify their own green chemistry project, which they will present to their peers using various digital media resources.
In this four-hour, 19-day class, students will earn their open water diver certification and use their underwater expertise to study Hawaiian coral reef ecology. During the first two weeks, students will complete the course and water skills necessary to complete the PADI Open Water Dive course. Following this, students will be introduced to coral reef ecology focusing on the common inhabitants in Hawai'i's coral reefs through the use of scuba, student projects, photography, and class presentations. Safe diving practices will be emphasized throughout the course.
This sustainability program offers a morning interdisciplinary seminar that integrates core skills—writing, math, science, and the arts—through ecoliteracy. From 8 a.m. to noon, Middle School students will focus on sustainability topics and select an elective class for the afternoon block.
Energy is our theme for the Summer of 2015. Students will explore energy—how it cannot be destroyed or created, just transformed. We will look at energy in food, food as energy, renewable energy, creative and artistic energy.
