    Overview

    The Spoleto Study Abroad Summer Session is a collaborative community of artists and scholars gathered to explore the rich cultural heritage of central Italy while fostering individual artistic, intellectual, and personal growth. 

    The program provides students an opportunity for an in-depth immersion in an area of artistic interest.

    The Spoleto Study Abroad Summer Session takes place in Spoleto, one of the most beautiful medieval towns in central Italy. Students aged 15-19 who are interested in vocal music, instrumental music, visual arts, photography, drama, filmmaking, and creative writing are offered a challenging and innovative experience. Students will experience a diverse and vibrant culture in the company of motivated peers and faculty.

    Courses of Study

    The Spoleto Study Abroad Summer Session offers students a focused immersion into an area of specific artistic interest and the study of ideas and cultures. Students explore the philosophical and conceptual ideas developed during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, Italian history and literature, as well as contemporary culture and society.

    Mornings are filled with structured courses and workshops. All students are enrolled in Arts & Ideas and Italian. The remaining two classes are selected to complement the student’s area of specialty. Examples of these courses are: Italian Renaissance Art and Architecture, History of Italian Opera, Photography, Drama workshop, and Visual Arts Workshop. These classes are from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

    During the afternoon, students focus on their area of specialty. These areas include vocal music, instrumental music, visual arts, photography, drama, film-making, and creative writing. This time is spent in the studio, in a seminar, on-site outdoors, or a rehearsal. Excursions to historically and artistically rich cities such as Siena, Florence, Urbino, Assisi, and Orvieto are scheduled twice-weekly. These excursions reinforce the material covered in the classroom and offer the students an opportunity to experience the rich history, art and culture of Italy first-hand.

     Facilities and Accommodations

    All students live together in a European collegial style at the Residence di SantíAngelo, a gorgeous fifteenth century convent in the medieval section of Spoleto. The convent has been beautifully renovated with modern conveniences and has spacious courtyards and colorful gardens. It is only a short walk from the residence to classes, the main piazzas of town and the restaurants where meals are served. Students are supervised by faculty, staff and resident advisors who live at the convent with the students. Classes take place in beautiful buildings throughout the historic medieval section of town with abundant, luminous spaces for visual art, voice and dance classes.

    • The setting of the immersion trip is ideal. Literally, like walking into a postcard. My vocal talent grew tremendously- working and performing weekly in that environment.
