Delve into the Costa Rican health system with this 17 day program that includes hands-on experience in the clinics. This is the ideal program for those interested in a medical or public health career! Participants learn about both western and alternative medicine and support public health initiatives in a local community
We begin the trip with orientation in the Central Valley and jump right into the service work. We volunteer with a project partner whose mission provides health services to immigrant families in Costa Rica. Participants assist with kids’ health education classes, shadow doctors in the clinic, and support nurses with patient intake.
Next, we move to the San Carlos region where we collaborate with local community members and partners on several important sanitation and hygiene projects. Participants work in collaboration with community members constructing health centers and helping with other service projects. Additionally, students take an active role assisting medical professionals in rural health visits. We take a break one day to enjoy a thrilling zip-line canopy tour with SKYTREK at Arenal Volcano!
After brushing up on our Spanish, we prepare for the homestay. We arrive to the community to meet our host families who are excited to meet us and open their homes and hearts to us! We spend the days together working alongside locals on health education and rainforest ecology projects. A favorite highlight is a visit and walk to a gorgeous waterfall! The afternoons and evenings are a highlight as everyone gets together to play soccer, enjoy game night, participate in a cooking class, and more!
We say a tearful goodbye to our host families and feel satisfied knowing that we made a positive contribution to the community and built lasting relationships. We make our way to Monteverde, where many alternative health practitioners and artists harness the biodiversity of the cloudforest. We learn about reflexology, yoga, acupuncture, and plant therapy. Additionally, we join a local cooperative for a pottery making class.
While we are sad to leave after an unforgettable and impactful experience, we bring home the friendships we’ve made and are excited to share the lessons we’ve learned!
