Be a part of the one of the oldest, most accessible and highly rated youth programs in the Boston area. Since 1946 Community Boating, Inc. has been a place where the youth of Boston can spend their summers- learning to sail, winsdurf, stand up paddleboard, and kayak along the banks of the Charles River.
Community Boating, Inc.’s unique Junior Program offers sailing, windsurfing, stand up paddleboard and kayak classes, as well as open sailing with access to the water and our boats anytime the Junior Program is open. Open for 10 weeks in the summer our drop-in style program instills upon our youth independence and the value of volunteerism. Sailing is an exciting sport that all children can succeed at. New sailors gain confidence by learning to captain their own vessel in a safe and nurturing environment.
The Community Boating Junior Program has two main components: classes and open sailing. Classes are typically five-day classes that are geared toward varying levels of sailing experience. Open sailing allows juniors to use any of our boats any time the Junior Program is open. The Junior membership fee is on a sliding scale between $1-$300 based on need, so every child can join regardless of ability to pay.
The majority of our classes are three hours long, although some are shorter, and classes start at different times throughout the day. Junior members can sign up for classes, and as they pass classes they can sign up for the next level class as they wish.
When students are not in a class, they are free to participate in open sailing. All junior members have membership cards that keep track of their “ratings”, which tell our instructors what boats they have demonstrated skills in and in what conditions. If they do not yet have the rating to go out sailing on their own they can sign up to go out for informal instruction, and they will then go out with another junior sailor who is more experienced than them.
We also offer environmental classes, a sailing race team, and plenty of extracurricular games and activities.
