    Overview

The Academy at SOAR is an adventure-based private boarding school for youth with ADHD/LDs for grades 7–12 that offers an alternative learning environment, located in North Carolina.

A Boarding School for Learning Differences & Disabilities

The Academy at SOAR provides differentiated instruction and curriculum for each student focusing on both academics and independent living skills instruction. SOAR's learning environment is structured to address the variety of learning styles, interests, and abilities found within the classroom, whether indoors or out.

Students at the private boarding school are actively engaged in the learning process through instruction in, Academics, Adventure, Self-Advocacy, Independent Living Skills, Project Based Learning, Field Studies, Community, and Empowerment. SOAR's model is student-centered.

Teams will rotate between residential living at North Carolina's Balsam Campus, and on expeditions across the country. Students will participate in high adventure activities such as canoeing the Florida Everglades, hiking the Grand Canyon area, rock climbing in Seneca Rocks of West Virginia and snorkeling among the tropical reefs of Belize. These expeditions provide the venue for developing problem-solving skills, effective communication strategies, and increasing self-awareness and general social skills, as well as an integration of academic skills. By achieving success in SOAR's adventure-based programs, each student builds self-esteem and self-confidence that translates to all areas of life.

The Academy at SOAR realizes the critical need for quality education and the necessity to meet students at their individual level of achievement and to key into their unique learning style. SOAR's mission is to provide an alternative learning environment that nurtures self-discovery, independent inquisition and allows students to become aware of their strengths, abilities, and challenges, along with techniques to overcome academic hurdles.

    Testimonials(3)

    • "Being parents of a child with an alternate learning style can be frustrating for both parent and child. It is difficult to watch your child struggle in a world where there is minimal understanding of the problem. The Academy at SOAR has been an answer to our search for understanding and education for our child. The staff revitalized him and created a learning environment that celebrates uniqueness, improves self-confidence, and teaches students they can overcome any obstacles they encounter."

    • "We cannot thank you all enough for the time, energy, patience, and creativity it took to teach Josh. Our desire has always been for our son to love learning - not just put in his time - but to truly find a passion in life that will allow him to flourish. Our family values each other's unique talents and believes strongly that we all have a path to follow. This SOAR process helped Josh gain a great deal of confidence, and see how much he can persevere even under trying circumstances. We can only imagine how much effort it takes to motivate these young people, and we honor all the hours you gave to them. Your feedback to us in so valuable and we will continue to rely on any works of wisdom you can provide for strategies in the coming school year."

    • "Our 12 year-old son has participated in 3 different SOAR summer camps over the years and is currently attending the SOAR Academy school year. Not only is he always excited to return to any program given by SOAR, but his progress on all fronts has been amazing (as observed by family, friends and therapists). Most importantly, his own observations about his life skills and social abilities have given him self-esteem and independence that give him a new and unprecedented HOPE FOR THE FUTURE! He has learned to see things from multiple perspectives, not just his own -- which is of course one of the key social skills he needed to learn! Through the physical and psychological challenges of the SOAR program, our son has learned to advocate for his needs and work through challenges with people other than his parents. Our son has always been completely safe and we have fully trusted the highly trained staff, who are supportive but do not coddle our kids as parents are sometimes apt to do."
