    Overview

Immerse yourself in the natural history and culture of New Zealand’s South Island for a semester that will be challenging and transformative. As you travel the rugged alpine ranges and paddle the stunning coastline, you’ll gain a sense of the island’s unique history and wildlife. If you’re looking for a semester away from the classroom and packed with unconventional learning, then this is the course for you.

On this course, you’ll learn diverse skills in varied environments and be part of an expedition you’ll never forget. You’ll travel through beautiful and rugged coastal areas, spectacular mountains, alpine grasslands, snowfields, rainforests, river gorges, and plants and animals found only in New Zealand as you hike, sea kayak, sail, or canoe.

The skills you learn will vary by course. All semesters include a cultural section, and two or three other skill types.

Throughout the course, you will learn and practice wilderness living and travel skills, risk management, leadership, and natural history. You’ll also spend time at a local Maori marae and learn about Maori history, culture, and connection to the land.
