    Overview

Inaugurated in 1967, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival honors living cultural traditions and celebrates those who practice and sustain them. Produced annually by the Smithsonian’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage and presented in association with the National Park Service, the festival has featured participants from all 50 states, every U.S. territory and more than 100 countries.

The success of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival is made possible by the dedicated time, energy, and talents of volunteers. Many people return to volunteer at the Festival because it offers great fun, great people, and lots to learn, and each year, we look forward to adding new volunteers to the ranks. With up to 350 slots open each day, there’s an opportunity suited to all interests!

Anyone age fourteen or older are welcome to volunteer. Those under eighteen must bring a signed guardian permission form, and anyone under sixteen must also be accompanied by an adult (guardian, older sibling, troop leader, etc.), who is also welcome to also volunteer.

Early application is encouraged. Some roles require unique training, so late applications or walk-ups may not be eligible for all opportunities.
