Tanglewood’s Leadership Programs build teamwork, outdoor skills, and a deep respect for nature. You'll learn ecology, communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and sustainable living. These lessons prepare you for success in school, work, and life. Living in a social community teaches real-world skills you’ll carry with you everywhere.
There are 3 phases to the Leadership Development Program:
- Leadership One - Ages 14-15
- Leadership Two - Ages 15-16
- Leadership Three - Ages 16-17
We also offer an Early College Outdoor Intensive for teens ages 15-18. This is a for-credit two-week intensive course, providing the opportunity to earn four college credits that will launch you on your way to a degree at UMaine or can be applied to most other colleges and universities.
All Leadership programs are based at our camp in Lincolnville, and campers practice being leaders through participation in outdoor adventures, focused skill-building activities, and being social.
All programs at Tanglewood require participants and staff to “disconnect” from digital devices to be truly present to programming and community needs. Trips take place rain or shine, and in all conditions in between (with caution and safety in mind). No two programs are the same, and different times of the summer showcase different facets of group process and adventure. Come with an open mind and be ready for whatever may come your way.
Teens today face greater challenges and stressors than we have seen in years. An important facet to leadership success is the development of true “social networks” among young people in real-time, to have peers with shared experiences that you are able to connect with and find support through outside of camp. Many leadership participants consider these programs some of the most valuable experiences of their lives.
We offer three Leadership cohorts by age that will build your skills and confidence as you move through your teens. No previous experience in the outdoors or as part of the Leadership program is required; you start in the Leadership program with your age cohort.
