We have a summer in Storrs for you!
UConn Pre-College Summer Creative Writing course provides high school students the opportunity to spend a week venturing on a literary Hero’s Quest at a nationally ranked public university campus.
How will you write your story?
Offered during Session 4, our Creative Writing course offers students the chance to explore their own concepts of identity, heroism and coming of age through taking on the roll of the author rather than reader.
As young adult readers, we have all enjoyed tales of the hero’s quest, whether we read about Odysseus and Penelope or Frodo and Bilbo, or more current heroes like Harry and Hermione, Percy and Annabeth, or Katniss and Peeta. But rarely are students given the opportunity to write their own tales. Through our Creative Writing session: Journeys and Monsters in Essays and Poems, students will study the genres of the essay and the poem and use them to explore themes of coming of age as they map onto the paradigm of the hero’s quest. Mornings will be spent studying the genres and drafting essays and poems. The afternoon sessions will be dedicated to workshopping drafts into publishable pieces.
