    Overview

Portsmouth Abbey’s Oxford Summer Programme invites students to embark on a pilgrimage of learning and adventure in the “city of dreaming spires.” Students will explore the vibrant and historic culture of Oxford, take pilgrimages to ancient churches, visit famous locations of film and story, punt on the River Cherwell, and grow in friendship through a shared experience of learning and adventure.

Guest lectures by visiting professors from the University of Oxford give students an opportunity to experience collegiate life at one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. Students read great works of English literature in daily seminars with program faculty, which include Portsmouth Institute executive director and Humanities teacher Christopher Fisher and best-selling author and director of vocations of Saint Louis Abbey, Fr. Augustine Wetta, O.S.B.

In addition to intensive study, students immerse themselves in the life of Oxford, complete with visits to Oxford’s historic colleges, celebrations of sacred liturgy in medieval churches, punting on the River Cherwell, poetry readings—and of course, afternoon tea. A day in London leads students to the famed National Gallery, a private, behind-the-scenes 2-hour tour of Westminster Abbey, and an invitation from the Dean of Westminster to attend Evensong in the Abbey’s famed choir stalls. Students live, eat, study, and worship in St Benet’s Hall, the English Benedictine Congregation’s Permanent Private Hall at the University of Oxford.

    • I wanted to thank you for all the opportunities you provided me while at the summer program the past two summers! My Public Speaking class has really helped me throughout the school year so far. I speak with my roommate from this past summer on a daily basis. I recently just returned from a trip to San Diego with her and her family. We had a great time, and if it wasn't for the Summer Program I would not have been able to meet Ana or make such a great friend. Again, I just wanted to thank you again for everything!

    • Great academics in a controlled environment and the children have their own fun activities. Great use of a month of summer-- fun and learning, what could be better than that?

    • From an academic perspective, my son is really excelling in school this fall. He has straight A's in every class and organizationally he typically stays a week ahead of his assignments. He attributes a lot of that to his experience at the Abbey and has actually thanked me twice for encouraging him to attend the summer program. I can attest to the personal and intellectual growth that he realized during his time there. It couldn't have come at a better time for my son. I know he looks forward to having the opportunity to return.

    • o Our son seemed to have enjoyed himself very much. He is entering Geometry Honors this fall with much confidence. He has picked up soccer during the summer, and he is very excited about playing Varsity B this season. It was a fun and safe experience all around!

    • I was pleased to hear my daughter so excited about her classes and never a complaint about homework. I think this was what school and learning should be about every day.
