The Portsmouth Abbey Summer Program is designed for thoughtful students looking for academic enrichment and good summer fun with peers from around the world in a beautiful location on the water. Fun, interesting and with a touch of spirituality.

Welcome to Portsmouth Abbey's Summer Program for middle and high school students! Through celebrating learning, nurturing the moral sense that lies within all people, and awakening our students’ sense of who they can become, we help them progress on their paths toward wisdom, an appreciation of the fullness of life, and greater success in school—all while having a good measure of summer seaside fun, on our beautiful campus on the shores of Narragansett Bay.

Our parents and students have been highly satisfied: over the past three summers, 95% have been very happy with their child’s experience (100% in 2014), 91% would recommend us, and 85% were interested in having their child return.

We know young people do best and learn the most when surrounded by caring adults in a safe environment. Summer Program courses are intended to engage, excite, and enrich a student’s mind, all while increasing facility with the skills necessary to be successful in school. There is homework, tests and grades, but all done in a more relaxed and easy-going manner than during the regular school year. Our courses range from standards like reading, writing, and mathematics, to robotics, computers, forensic science, and music technology. We also offer ESL and SAT, ACT, and SSAT prep classes.

Our afternoon enrichment program is designed to be fun, but also to expose students to new experiences and ideas. In addition to standard summer camp fare, like sailing, swimming, kayaking, golf, tennis and horseback riding, the afternoons provide a chance for them to gain a deep understanding of this coastal environment, through the study of marine ecology, landscape painting, and outdoor education. We also have a dance program, as well as general sports and recreation of all sorts.

The Portsmouth Abbey Summer Program brings together young people from all over the world to Rhode Island for classes, activities, athletics and trips around New England, under the care and guidance of experienced, compassionate adults. Much more information, including all the course offerings for summer of 2015, is on our website (portsmouthabbey.org; click on the “Summer” drop down menu). Please contact us if you have any questions, or need more materials.

Consistently, our parents and students tell us that the Summer Program is the perfect mix of academics and fun, that it provides a good head start on the next school year, and that the experience our students get with peers from all over the world is invaluable. Won’t you join us?

    • I wanted to thank you for all the opportunities you provided me while at the summer program the past two summers! My Public Speaking class has really helped me throughout the school year so far. I speak with my roommate from this past summer on a daily basis. I recently just returned from a trip to San Diego with her and her family. We had a great time, and if it wasn't for the Summer Program I would not have been able to meet Ana or make such a great friend. Again, I just wanted to thank you again for everything!

    • Great academics in a controlled environment and the children have their own fun activities. Great use of a month of summer-- fun and learning, what could be better than that?

    • From an academic perspective, my son is really excelling in school this fall. He has straight A's in every class and organizationally he typically stays a week ahead of his assignments. He attributes a lot of that to his experience at the Abbey and has actually thanked me twice for encouraging him to attend the summer program. I can attest to the personal and intellectual growth that he realized during his time there. It couldn't have come at a better time for my son. I know he looks forward to having the opportunity to return.

    • • Our son seemed to have enjoyed himself very much. He is entering Geometry Honors this fall with much confidence. He has picked up soccer during the summer, and he is very excited about playing Varsity B this season. It was a fun and safe experience all around!

    • I was pleased to hear my daughter so excited about her classes and never a complaint about homework. I think this was what school and learning should be about every day.
