    Overview

In this two-week course, students will explore how environmental conversations evolved from print to today’s social platforms, and how digital messages can spark action or make us tune out. This program is perfect for high schoolers curious about the planet, media, and making an impact.

Join us for a two-week investigation of how technology and communication converge to shape our understanding of nature and the role of humans in global ecosystems.

From early print publications to today’s digital platforms, environmentalism in North America has grown alongside changes in media technologies. In this course, you will explore how rhetoric (the way we use language to persuade) and mediated texts (any communication that uses technology like texts, social media posts, or online articles, instead of face-to-face conversation) shape how people think about nature. Sometimes these messages raise awareness and inspire action. Other times, they make it easy for people to ignore the harm happening to the environment, even when it affects our own survival.

We will focus on understanding the historical development of environmental issues, and how changes in technology have shaped the conversation and framed these challenges. By the end of the program, you will gain a deeper, critical perspective on modern environmental problems and their historical evolution over time.

    Hands-On Project

You will design and launch a social media campaign that addresses a real environmental issue. This project combines research, creativity, and strategic communication to engage audiences and inspire meaningful action.

This course is designed for high school students who:

    • Are curious about the environment and want to understand global challenges.
    • Enjoy exploring media, technology, and social platforms.
    • Want to develop strong communication and critical thinking skills.
    • Are looking for an engaging summer experience that prepares them for college-level work.
