    Overview

This camp will introduce middle school students to the technical skills involved in video production. Campers will be divided into production groups and will cover pre-production, production, and post-production fundamentals.

Videos will tackle topics from a variety of local options, and each group will choose what interests them. Middle school students will learn basic digital camera skills and editing in Final Cut Studio. Fundamental skills covered will include introductions to composition and framing, exposure, lighting, sound design, interviewing, essential editing basics, and post-production finishing.

Guest speakers will visit from Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies and Arts of the Moving Image and will elaborate on several of the concepts taught and give higher-level insights.

Some prior experience is assumed, but this camp will cater to all students.

    • Focused on production of music videos• Interaction with staff from Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies
    • Familiarity and proficiency in Final Cut Studio gained in the Duke computer lab
    • Field production skills learning on professional equipment
    • Field trip and production trials at Shadowbox Studio in Durham
    • End-of-program screening at a local venue
    • Strengthening group collaboration skills

The focus of the camp will be lively and fun music video creation. Each camper will take home a hard drive with all the material and the files they create, for future learning and experimentation.

Duke Pre-College invites all students, grades 6-11, to experience on-campus learning. Students under age 13 are restricted to the commuter option for all campus programs.
