Between the Lines (BTL) is a mutlilingual program that brings together students from different countries for creative writing and cultural exchange.
Since 2008, BTL has hosted young writers from over 20 countries including the U.S., Russia, and more than 15 Arabic-speaking countries throughout the Middle East and North Africa. BTL will conduct two sessions in the summer of 2015, each focusing on Peace and the Writing Experience by bringing together writers from diverse backgrounds, who will explore their many histories, traditions, and cultural practices while also thinking about how literature and writing can lead to empathy, dialogue, and a shared understanding of the human condition.
For two exciting weeks, participants learn from one another through creative writing workshops, a global literature class, and special events featuring prominent guest speakers and cultural exchange activites. BTL offers young writers the opportunity to experience other cultures and campuse life at a major university via a small, sturcutred program run by experienced staff. The University of Iowa is located in Iowa City, a UNESCO City of Literature and home to the Iowa Writers' Workshop. Students live in university droms with trained counselors and teachers. The University of Iowa's residence halls are well-lit and secure; floors are seperated by gender, and each participant will be matched with a roommate from another country.
By the end of each session, participants will have grown not only as writers but also as citizens of the world, becoming part of a tight-knit international network. BTL is the space where stories meet cultures, where poems about one's street meet the map of the world.
