We offer exciting, rewarding outdoor adventure education for youth ages 12-18 ranging in length from 5-20 days. Teen Wilderness Adventures combine one or more outdoor activities--like hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, --with spectacular destinations.
Learn the skills to deal with backcountry emergencies in an authentic setting. High in the presidential range of the White Mountains, you will learn about Wilderness First Aid and Search and Rescue. Participants will practice and experience search and rescue fist hand from our professional instructors and leave with a Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification from SOLO. Camp at the base of Tuckerman ravine and explore the surrounding area while getting hands on practice with the skills needed to respond to emergencies in the outdoors and walk away with increased confidence for future personal trips or adventures in the wilderness. For ages: 15-18 General Itinerary: The participants will meet each other and the AMC instructors on the first morning at the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. We will spend the morning getting to know each other, covering logistics and expectations, and thoroughly checking our personal gear and all group equipment. After lunch we will make any final equipment adjustments and backpack 2.4 miles to Hermit Lakes Shelters where we will set up basecamp for the duration of the trip. Wilderness First Aid ~ An instructor from Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities (SOLO) will meet us at our campsite on day two and spend three days teaching backcountry first aid and CPR. This experiential section has plenty of hands-on scenarios, including a mock rescue. Particular emphasis is placed on preventing backcountry emergencies through proper trip planning and equipment selection. Participants will receive a 16-hour Wilderness First Aid certification upon successful completion of this section. Introduction to Search and Rescue ~ The following three days we will day hike in the Presidential Range and explore search and rescue techniques while learning about the history of this topic in the White Mountains. This section includes hands-on teaching and practice of search tactics, basic rescue systems, and incident response practice.
