The Acadia Institute of Oceanography offers a two week Intermediate program for students in grades 6-8. The Intermediate sessions are a chance for students to explore their academic interest in Oceanography on the shores of Mount Desert Island.
The Intermediate sessions are designed for students age 12–14 and present a solid natural history approach to Oceanography while introducing students to basic marine concepts and laboratory procedures. Many students who attend an Intermediate session enjoy returning in future years for an Advanced session.
Students attending AIO should be prepared for an academic environment that includes classroom lectures and seminars, field studies, laboratory work, as well as individual and group assignments.
Each evening our staff or visiting speakers present special lectures that provide background information for the field activities, and seminars about topics in Oceanography are offered daily before dinner. There are also optional morning lessons in laboratory techniques. All students will collect for and maintain a saltwater aquarium.
Two separate sessions are offered each summer, during the months of June and August. Sessions begin on arrival Sunday after 12:00pm and end on the second Friday between 9:00am and 12:00pm.
AIO's overnight summer programs are housed in the vintage 1931 Dunham Schoolhouse. A classic American red brick schoolhouse, the building has been carefully restored and updated to offer clean and comfortable accommodations. Three of the large classrooms have been converted into open dormitories and students sleep on bunk beds. The schoolhouse also includes a lecture hall, recreation room, a research wet laboratory, library, nurse's office, dining hall, bathrooms, and showers. The academic schedule of the overnight summer programs with AIO is designed to allow for time each day for recreational activities such as hiking in Acadia National Park, swimming, group games, and visits to local sites. And there is plenty of free time to read, write letters, socialize and relax.
Intermediate Program Cost: $3,300
