Journey
A Gap Year Internship
Live. Learn. Serve.
Journey is an 8-month program of Camp Bighorn designed for young adults to experience a life walking with Jesus, learning foundations for life and faith, and serving the world in tangible ways. Participants will finish Journey with life-long friendships, a sense of identity and belonging, and skills to lead others throughout their lives.
Journey combines learning and growth with adventure and experience. Every week we take the lessons learned in training and solidify them through experiences, whether in service to others or through outdoor adventure. You will also learn how to lead others through adventures, such as rock climbing and white-water rafting. Significant time is devoted to personal and spiritual growth, from one-on-one discipleship with Bighorn staff to extended wilderness trips and cultural trips overseas.
Join us for a Journey of living in community, learning to love God and others, and leading through service. We desire to be a community that practices radical hospitality, loves audaciously, trusts God's story, invites outsiders in, and partners with God to put the world back together. You belong here!
Live.
Camp Bighorn is a special place to live! Nestled in the Rocky Mountains of Western Montana, we are a multi-generational, multicultural community that strives to follow and reflect Jesus and live out the gospel. Through Journey, you will learn what it means to live in community as the Body of Christ. You will live on site at camp, sharing dorms with other participants and joining in camp life with staff and guests. As part of our life in community, you will be spending time in small groups, having family nights with staff, and being paired up with a staff member as a mentor throughout the year.
You will also experience a life of adventure! Outdoor adventure is a way of life at Camp Bighorn. We will be active every day, balancing time inside with time in nature. Most days at least half of our time will be spent outdoors, whether having class on the trail or the river, learning new adventures in the snow, or telling stories in the desert. Adventures take place in the wilderness of Montana, deserts of the western United States, and a combination of desert and rainforest terrain in Central Mexico.

Learn.
Camp Bighorn is about developing Kingdom leaders. The Journey program will give you skills that you need to lead in any context. You will also develop habits for living a balanced life. Throughout the year, you will grow in three specific areas of leadership: personal development, spiritual growth, and adventure leadership.
Personal Development: Journey is an opportunity to step away from everyday life and focus on establishing your identity and trajectory for the future. You will learn about your personality, strengths, and identity in Christ. We will walk with you as you develop a personal mission statement and identify your values. You will also learn practical life skills, such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, and budgeting.
Spiritual Development: Journey is also an opportunity to establish the foundation of your faith. You will be discipled by staff and learn how to disciple others. Extended time will be given to understanding God’s story and learning how to read your Bible. Journey is a safe space to wrestle with questions and doubts. You will leave having experienced God’s unconditional love in a way you had not anticipated.
Adventure Leadership: Leadership training will include soft and hard skills. Soft skills include understanding group dynamics, risk management, and adapting to cultural differences. Hard skills will include facilitating a group, planning adventure experiences, and guiding adventures. Some of the adventures you will learn how to lead are rock climbing, backpacking, white-water sports (rafting, paddleboarding, canoeing), ropes course, zipline, and team-building activities. As part of your internship, you will become certified as a Swift Water Rescue Technician Level 1 and in Wilderness Advanced First Aid.
Serve.
Great leaders practice humility and serve others. We will practice serving at camp, in the community, and internationally. Participants will serve at camp in a variety of ways. As groups come to Camp Bighorn, you will help lead adventures, serve in the kitchen, and assist in the operation of camp. Throughout the year, participants will be volunteering at the local school and at community events. Our international trip will have opportunities to serve in other cultures and languages. This year we are going to Mexico.
