Given current projections for COVID-19, Global Citizen Year has made the extremely difficult decision to suspend our 2020-2021 Global Citizen Year Fellowship. Read more about it on our website. Please know, we’re more committed than ever to our mission and determined to re-launch the Global Citizen Year Fellowship in 2021.
Embark on a journey of cross-cultural immersion, meaningful internships and world-class training. Each year, we recruit and train a diverse corps of the brightest high school graduates and support them through a transformative gap year after high school. Through intensive training and immersion in communities across Africa, Latin America, and Asia our Fellows contribute to local efforts in education, environmental conservation, public health, agriculture, and social enterprise. At Global Citizen Year, we give emerging leaders the experience to solve real problems, the perspective to see new opportunities and the network to make change happen.
Homestay: You’ll get to know and participate in the culture at an intimate level by being a part of your host family’s daily life. Homestays range from urban to very rural, and families come from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. Host families are carefully selected and trained by Global Citizen Year staff according to health, safety, and cultural criteria. Each Fellow is matched one-to-one with a host-family to ensure a truly immersive experience.
Apprenticeship: Learn and contribute at a local project or organization. Work alongside members of your community on projects that really matter. Gain satisfying work experience in fields like environmental conservation, education, public health, agriculture, or social enterprise. Your apprenticeship is just the starting point of your community engagement; join a local sports team, build a community garden, or learn traditional dance. You’ll have the time and independence to shape your experience, pursue your passions, and discover new ones.
Language: Become fluent in Spanish, French, Portuguese or Hindi. Full immersion, tutoring and online training will accelerate your learning far beyond any campus classroom could. You’ll become fluent enough to confidently travel the country on your own and skip ahead in college language courses.
Lifelong Network: Share this gap year experience with extraordinary Fellows from around the globe. You'll also have access to our network of over 500 alumni who are making a difference at over 200 colleges and in careers worldwide. Launch your future knowing this crew will be your network for life.
Maximize College: After your bridge year, you’ll start college with the benefit of real-world experience, a global perspective, and a clear sense of purpose. Arrive on campus knowing who you are, why you’re there, and what you’re capable of.
