    Overview

    The School of Art offers undergraduate, masters-level & doctoral level degree programs. Areas of study include art & design education, art history, ceramics, drawing, sculpture, fibers, illustration, metals, museum studies, painting, photography, printmaking, time arts, and visual communications.

    The School of Art and Design, with a faculty of more than 40 artists, designers, and scholars, and an enrollment of more than 650 undergraduate and 80 graduate students, is one of the best and most comprehensive public university art schools in the United States, with a nationally established reputation in a number of fields. The long-standing quality of the School of Art's programs, its affiliation with a major university, its location near the population centers of northern Illinois, and the competitiveness of its educational costs make Northern's program in the visual arts one of the best education values for art students.

    The School of Art has been a fully accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) since 1969. All academic programs at NIU are also accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, while programs in education are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.
