Bikes Not Bombs uses the bicycle as a vehicle for social change. We reclaim thousands of bicycles each year. We create local and global programs that provide skill development, jobs, and sustainable transportation. Our programs mobilize youth and adults to be leaders in community transformation.
Whether they are with us for the summer or for the entire school year, our Youth Apprentices build critical workplace skills and develop post secondary plans to achieve economic mobility. As young people gain these skills, they also gain confidence in their ability to lead. Many become peer mentors, educators, and organizers. We cultivate civic engagement and advocacy—training youth to fight for safer streets, transportation equity, and environmental sustainability.
Examples of your work will include:
- Learning and teaching basic bike mechanics
- Supporting free bike repair events
- Learning and teaching safe bike riding skills
- Supporting community-based group bike rides
- Collecting and inventorying donated bikes
- Preparing shipments of bikes and parts to our partners in the Global South
- Refurbishing bikes to give to people who need them the most
- Campaigning for safer streets
- Surveying and hosting listening sessions for communities to assess transportation needs
