Founded in 1886, the College of Creative Arts at Massey University is a world-class art and design school based in Wellington, New Zealand, offering programs in Design, Creative Media Production, Commercial Music, Fine Arts and Māori Visual Arts.

 

Situated in the heart of Wellington, New Zealand’s vibrant creative capital city, home to New Zealand’s film industry, including Weta Workshop and Weta Digital, gaming industry, the College of Creative Arts is New Zealand’s premier and internationally ranked Art and Design School.

 

The College is:

 

  • The oldest Art and Design School in New Zealand.
  • Ranked in the Top 100 Art and Design Schools in the world by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS).
  • Ranked 2nd in the Asia-Pacific region by RED DOT, the international design awards agency, which gives Massey a distinctive seal of quality for its design programs.
  • National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) approved as ‘Substantially Equivalent’.
  • Ranked 1st in New Zealand for design and visual art research, according to the 2019 New Zealand government Performance Based Research Funding (PBRF) round.

The College is divided into three schools:

The College offers pre-degree, undergraduate and graduate qualifications taught by faculty who are at the forefront of innovative creative arts research, enterprise and practice in New Zealand and internationally.

Bachelor of Creative Media Production

 

The world needs new ways of telling stories. Join the next generation of leaders in digital media.

 

Future-focused and driven by new technology, the Bachelor of Creative Media degree emphasizes originality, innovation and critical thought, and is led by practicing academics and industry experts. With an emphasis on production skills, students take creative media projects through development of initial concepts and narratives to a completed, distributable work.

 

Film and television

 

Students study the art and craft of storytelling through moving image and sound. Using industry standard equipment and tools, students gain skills in pre-production development, on-set and on-location filming, editing, post- production, grading and delivery technologies. Allowing students to practice story and concept development, direction, camera operation, production design, editing, lighting, and sound.

 

Animation and VFX

 

Students in the Animation and VFX pathway gain skills in character design, 3D modelling, texturing and rigging, storyboarding, compositing, particle generation and dynamics.

 

Game Development

 

With no prior programming knowledge required, this course equips students to design, implement, and test their own game creations.

 

Creative Technologies

 

Students learn creative coding, hardware development, data visualization, and how to build multi-platform experiences using cutting-edge technologies, and designing VR/AR/MR experiences.

 

Producing and Directing

 

Through initial ideation and pitching, intellectual property development, pre-production scheduling and budgeting, fundraising and stakeholder management, students in this pathway will have hands-on experience in this highly in-demand field.

 

Bachelor of Commercial Music

 

Perform, produce, and promote the music of tomorrow.

 

Established in 2016, the Bachelor of Commercial Music degree is the most progressive music programme in New Zealand. It is future-focused, technology-driven and industry-engaged, with a faculty that includes some of New Zealand’s top music industry professionals.

 

Students can choose whether they want to design new music technology, make and perform new music, or immerse themselves in the business of music.

 

In today’s music industry successful practitioners need to be media-savvy entrepreneurs who are skilled in using and developing new production tools and distribution networks, as well as being in control of live performance and merchandising. Students of commercial music become familiar with composition and production techniques for interactive and digital platforms such as games and mobile applications, and are also able to demonstrate an understanding of digital rights, music branding and music marketing that differs from traditional business models.

 

Music Technology

 

Use world-class recording and production studios and custom-designed technology labs. Learn hardware and software development (including programming, coding and electronics). Explore the world of sound engineering. Operate industry-standard large consoles and the latest digital recording and editing technologies Develop live light and sound skills so you’ve got all aspects of live events in venues covered.

 

Music Practice

 

Study musicianship and performance using your instrument or musical interface of choice. Explore digital production and composition techniques. Improve your song-writing and composition, and learn essential recording production methods.

 

Music Industry

 

Study artist development and management, label and distribution networks, music publishing, and the production of one-off and large-scale live events. Learn about emerging business models that challenge traditional industry conventions.

 

Bachelor of Design (with Honors)

 

Change the world through design. Study in New Zealand’s leading and most comprehensive design program.

 

Visual Communication Design

 

Discover an array of subject areas within visual communication design that you can delve deep into, including concept design, illustration, typography, interaction design, information design and branding.

 

Fashion Design

 

Develop ideas, fashion communication methods, pattern-making and construction techniques to challenge the way fashion is designed, made and worn. Work with clients, industry and devise your own fashion collections.

 

Textile Design

 

Create surface solutions using various mediums, established and emerging technologies, and processes including weave, knit, dye, embroidery and print. Be challenged to use alternative materials, color, drawing and pattern.

 

Photography

 

Use critical understanding and highly developed technical skills to create work that deals with ideas and issues. Utilize our professional cameras and capture systems in well- equipped studios with high quality digital print facilities, wet-based darkrooms and specialist labs.

 

Industrial Design

 

Use human-centered design to solve problems while developing techniques for idea generation, learn about materials and processes, human experience, ergonomics, visual communication, modelling and production.

 

Spatial Design

 

Bring together the disciplines of interior, architecture, landscape, urban, performance, exhibition and digital design to create exciting new experiences.

 

Concept Design

 

Create concept design for entertainment and education within film, animation, television, gaming, and location-based experiences, using traditional art forms as well as digital.

 

Integrated Design

 

Combine courses from across the Bachelor of Design with Honors for a focused program that suits your interests.

 

Bachelor of Fine Arts (with Honors)

 

Expand your mind and find your place in the art world with some of New Zealand’s finest artists. The School of Art - Whiti o Rehua was established in 2001, with a faculty that comprises some of Aotearoa – New Zealand’s finest artists.

 

Be the commentator, the activist, the narrator or the storyteller across a range of mediums to transform perceptions, express a point of view or make a political comment.

 

Work in an interdisciplinary studio environment, surrounded by other students working in all types of media. Develop your own unique art practice, voice and confidence as an artist.

 

This contemporary art program facilitates positive interpersonal communication and fosters a critical understanding of the place of art in today’s world. Open plan studio spaces are shared across year levels, enabling support and exchange of ideas between year groups. Students of fine art explore media that includes sculpture, painting, drawing, performance, installation, moving image, photography, printmaking, site-responsive work, curatorial activities and art writing. With a focus on the methods and ideas of contemporary art production, and with technical support, students are encouraged to produce work that makes the audience think and feel, act and react, whatever the mode of art making.

 

Māori Visual Arts

 

Join a unique community where te reo, tikanga and whanaungatanga are the keys to growing creative practices and processes in toi Māori.

 

Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts

 

As a Māori Visual arts student you will develop perceptual and conceptual skills in two- and three-dimensional art practice alongside a cultural foundation for verbal and visual communication. Exhibitions and community courses allow you to interact with the broader Māori community to further develop your awareness and understanding of relevant issues. Unique to Massey University, the Bachelor of Māori Visual Arts encompasses contemporary Māori art, Māori language, Māori culture, and tikanga.
