Julie Landes studied music at Pacific Lutheran University.
How did you discover your passion for music?
My passion for music began when I started piano lessons in kindergarten. As a child who loved music, I was prompted to join the elementary choir. However, though I had brief stints in choral ensembles, it wasn’t until my sophomore year of high school that I really fell in love with the art of singing. My high school had recently gotten a new choral director, and she inspired us all to work hard and sing with great technique. I was motivated not only to keep growing in my singing abilities, but to teach and spread my love for music to others. This teacher — a PLU alumna — became one of my greatest role models.
Why did you pick this particular college?
As a senior in high school, I knew the Pacific Lutheran University Music Department was the place for me. I toured and applied to other schools, but never felt as welcome and inspired as I did on the PLU campus. I was excited by the reputation of PLU’s Music Education program and the prospect of someday joining the choirs I had idolized for so long. My decision to attend PLU was easy, and I will forever be grateful that I chose to attend this university.
What has been your favorite part of this college?
Before coming to PLU, I did not fully realize how many enriching opportunities I would have in the years to come. I am incredibly grateful for my experiences singing in Choir of the West, conducting choral ensembles, and engaging with schools in the PLU community. I even got to travel to Trinidad and Tobago for a month to learn about the music of Trinidad Carnival! However, the greatest part about PLU has been the support from faculty members. I have often doubted my abilities, but every single one of my professors has inspired me to pursue my love of music through my future career.
How do you think this program will help in what you want to do next?
As I head into my student teaching, I know that I will always be supported and encouraged by the PLU community. I feel prepared with the knowledge and skills that I have attained through my education, and I hope to learn and grow as a future music educator through the experiences to come. PLU has given me the tools to achieve my goal of being a great choral director and educator throughout the rest of my life.
