Rachael Dobosz studied music at DePaul University's School of Music.
Why did you pick this particular college?
When I began looking at colleges towards the end of my time in high school I knew I wanted to pursue a performance career in a city with a great music culture, as well as have the opportunity to take liberal arts courses. I was interested in the DePaul School of Music when I learned about the programs within the music school that focused on all aspects of the music industry and the opportunity to explore other courses and subjects to contribute to my career.
I was drawn to DePaul not only by the programs but the world renowned faculty as well. It was important for me to be mentored by professionals that are actively working in their careers, which has inspired me to work towards my professional goals. Being a student in Chicago has made it possible for me to attend live performances by some of the best classical music and jazz ensembles that make Chicago their home, as well as visiting ensembles from across the globe and watch mentors and peers I see every week performing with them.
What's the hardest part for you about music?
Being a music student can often be difficult with the long practice and study hours as well as uncertain job prospects. One of the most valuable things that I received from my time at DePaul University was the endless support from peers, faculty, and staff members. My teachers have supported me to challenge myself with performance opportunities and independent projects, and have helped me discover the variety of work that can be done with a performance career. In the School of Music I have been constantly surrounded by my highly talented peers which has motivated me to challenge myself, and am equally motivated to achieve my goals with their constant support and friendship.
How do you think that this program will help in what you want to do next?
As a student at DePaul I feel that I have been given the tools to be a versatile musician through the required courses and ensemble opportunities. The School of Music has a large amount of ensembles that prepared me for many different types of performances from baroque to twenty-first century compositions. The focus on becoming a versatile musician extends beyond performance practice and the courses taken in both the music and liberal arts program have made me prepared for taking orchestral auditions, performing solo recitals, freelancing, conducting research, and more. I have been able to use these tools to begin a career performing professionally while also being a student.
