HUMANITIES EXPLORATORY WORKSHOPS

Wellesley College is consistently recognized as a top women's college, where students become women leaders who think critically, engage globally, and are committed to values of honor and service. Wellesley's Pre-College Humanities Exploratory Workshops are committed to these values, meaning Pre-College students will be challenged to think critically and engage deeply with unique academic topics.

One Wellesley Summer offers the following Week One Humanities Workshops:

  • Priestesses and Courtesans: Representing Women in Ancient Greece, where through close readings of Greek drama, philosophy, and oratory, students will analyze the way women at ritual and on the street were used in the construction of ancient identity.
  • Exploring Children's Literature: This workshop will introduce students to young children’s literature and its importance to the development of language and pre-literacy skills. We will explore classic children’s books, the importance to young children of seeing themselves in the books they read, and contemporary examples of children’s books that provide positive images and stories for all children.
  • Exploring Writing in a Selfie Culture: This one-week writing course will explore how the selfie culture is changing how we see ourselves, how we present ourselves to the world, and ultimately, how we fundamentally relate to others around us.
  • Are We What We Eat? Writing About Food and Culture: where students will explore food as an essential ingredient in the making of selves, families, communities, regions, and nations, focusing on the intersections between food and culture.
  • Alternative Photographic Processes: This workshop will explore nineteenth-century photography methods in the darkroom studio in order to get back to the materiality, the craft, and the event of photography in its earliest iterations. Processes explored will include pinhole, cyanotype, and salted print techniques.

One Wellesley Summer offers the following Week Two Humanities Workshops:

  • Culture at Hand: Digital Storytelling and Cultural Anthropology, where students will analyze the ways that digital media has shaped—and continues to shape—how society writes itself into existence at the beginning of the 21st century.
  • Seeing Ourselves Through our Relationships with Animals, where students will explore fascinating questions in exposing what humans’ relationships with animals reveal about us and our (in)humanity.
  • Friendship: A Philosophical Examination, this course will examine different types of friendships and the features that characterize and sustain them, investigating whether all friendships are ultimately instrumental.
  • Poetry Writing, this course will offer students the opportunity to immerse themselves in writing poetry by working in many different forms, sharing poems and by exploring  publishing opportunities.
  • Flash Fiction: Writing Very Short Fiction, students will move back and forth between reading brilliant examples of flash fiction from around the world and writing her very own flash fictions.
  • Writing for TV, This workshop focuses on writing the television script, including original pilots and episodes of existing shows. We’ll study both one-hour dramas and half-hour comedies, and practice the basics of script format, visual description, episode structure, as well as character and story development.

THE EXPLORATORY EXPERIENCE

In participating in an Exploratory Workshop, students become members of the Wellesley community. For both of our one-week programs, students reside in a historical, residential dorm, with access to Wellesley dining and amenities. Unlike many other pre-college programs, Wellesley College offers the invaluable opportunity to experience a small, all women, liberal arts environment while building leadership skills beyond the classroom. Out of all the features of Wellesley’s Exploratory Workshops, participants usually reflect on the empowerment they feel during their summers at Wellesley. One participant noted: "I feel so empowered being at a place where I am valued."
