Overview

Wake Forest University’s Online Immersion Program offers flexible, online courses in Medicine and Business for high school students. You’ll learn from Wake Forest University or Wake Forest School of Medicine professors, be mentored by a WFU student, and earn a Certificate of Completion. 

The two courses offered are Making the Rounds -- An Insider’s Guide to Becoming a Doctor and Subscribe, Innovate, Disrupt: An Insider’s Guide to Business. Read on to learn about each program.

Making the Rounds -- An Insider’s Guide to Becoming a Doctor

Always wanted to be a doctor? Or think you may want to pursue pre-med in college? If you have a passion for science and want to get an inside look at how physicians manage the patient journey from ambulance to ER to operating room to rehab, Wake Forest’s new, online course opens the door of learning to this exciting field.

You’ll be guided through this online course by Dr. Lindsay Strowd and Dr. Roy Strowd, Wake Forest School of Medicine professors. They will take you through the lifecycle of a heart attack. You’ll see immersive simulations and videos and have course readings and assignments.

In this program, you will:

-  Get an insider’s tour of a working hospital.

-  Learn how all departments work together — from patient intake to testing, treatment and post-hospital follow-up care.

-  Gain insights into the many types of academic, scientific and practical training required of different healthcare professions.

-  Understand whether or not a future in medicine is a fit for you.

-  Demonstrate what you’ve learned in a final Capstone project.

-  Earn a Certificate of Completion from Wake Forest University.

The course is 100% online and almost entirely asynchronous, meaning that you can do it whenever it works with your schedule. There will be 30 hours of overall course time over 2 or 4 weeks, depending on the session you choose, including recorded video lessons, unit assignments, and sessions with your mentor. 

Lessons will cover the following subjects, among others: 

-  The anatomy of the heart

-  Social factors that contribute to heart disease

-  The medical professionals, technologies, and medicine used to treat and heal patients

-  How a working hospital operates from the point of view of different medical professionals

-  The educational and training requirements to go into a medical career

Business: Subscribe, Innovate, Disrupt: An Insider’s Guide to Business

Ever wonder what makes companies like Apple or Netflix successful? This online course designed for high school students will show you how today’s most competitive companies operate: how they create their brands and products; how they innovate, find people, and manage budgets; and what investors examine to make investment decisions. If you’re thinking about studying business, economics, banking, technology, product design, management, or marketing in college, this course offers an exciting way to prepare.

You’ll get an inside look at today’s businesses that few high school students have ever experienced. You’ll be guided by Dr. Dan Fogel, an award-winning professor at Wake Forest University, through lecture, multimedia simulations and interactive assignments. You’ll also be assigned a personal mentor who will brainstorm projects with you.

In this program, you will:

-  Understand what makes cutting-edge companies tick and how to adopt their creative thinking.

-  Develop a strategic mindset — apply it within your daily life.

-  Develop your presentation skills and demonstrate what you’ve learned in a final Capstone project.

-  Earn a Certificate of Completion from Wake Forest University.
