Exploring jazz at UConn's Pre-College Summer Program will closely replicate life as a UConn jazz student. Your day will be divided into segments of instrumental instruction, ensemble playing, and classes in jazz improvisation, theory and jazz history. The whole experience will culminate in a final performance showcasing all you have learned.
We have a summer in Storrs for you!
UConn's Pre-College Summer Music Training and Jazz Exploration course provides high school students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich history of jazz as well as hone their skills alongside accomplished musicians at a nationally ranked public university campus.
Indulge in Your Passions.
Offered during Session 4, our Music Training: Jazz Exporation course allows students to spend a week honing their musicianship skills, and immersing themselves in the world of jazz music. Through daily ensemble rehearsals, jazz theory lessons, instrumental instruction, historical examination, ear training, solo transcription/analysis and performances, students will form a solid foundation on which they can further develop their improvisational skills.
Pre-Requisite: Students are admissible to the pre-college summer jazz session provided they have participated in their school band programs from middle school through to the present.
This pre-college summer course will be taught by UConn Jazz Studies faculty members, Earl MacDonald and John Mastroianni. MacDonald is a two-time JUNO-nominated recording artist, a winner of the Sammy Nestico Award for jazz arranging, and the former Musical Director and pianist for trumpeter, Maynard Ferguson. Mastroianni was named and honored as the 2014 Connecticut Teacher of the Year. He is a two-time Music Educator GRAMMY nominee who has performed, toured and recorded with artists including Gerry Mulligan, Louie Belson and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra in NYC.
