    Overview

The Road Less Traveled combines outdoor adventure, community service, and meaningful travel experiences across the world.

Our mission is to develop and enhance the self-confidence, teamwork, and leadership qualities of our travelers, and to inspire them to develop their own vision of service.

    PHILOSOPHY OF SERVICE

We provide community-driven service and only go where help is wanted and where both people and place can benefit from our presence.  Our projects are defined and directed by the individuals that we directly serve.  We encourage our participants to develop their own vision of community service through examination and reflection.  We are committed to preserving the environment, the character of the lands, and the cultures we visit. With thought and conscience, we educate about stewardship of the planet.

    STANDARDS

We are an American Camp Association accredited program and a recipient of the ACA Illinois Program Excellence Award.  We are recipients of Markel’s Safety 1st Award which recognizes organizations that have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the safety of their employees and clients.  We are a President’s Volunteer Service Award certifying organization.

    SAFETY RECORD

We set the standard in the industry for safety.  All field staff are required to obtain a minimum of 80 hours of wilderness medicine training in the form of Wilderness First Responder certification.  Medical protocols and standing orders are reviewed annually by our Volunteer Medical Advisor.  We have a physician on-call 24-hours a day.

    FAMILY

Since RLT's founding, all of our Directors have worked full time on the front lines of management and decision-making, and they make themselves completely available day or night to our families. The Directors operate with the belief that the young people who come on our programs are no different than their own children.

    LEADERSHIP

Our leaders are outstanding! They embody the RLT values and are passionate about youth development and travel. They undergo a rigorous application process and intensive training.  The average age of RLT trip leaders is 26 years old.  Our leaders are experienced, genuine, spirited, friendly, well-educated, and well-traveled. They are experts in wilderness adventure, service learning, and culture.  RLT training equips our leaders with all the skills they’ll need in the field - everything from trip-specific health issues, health care protocols, group management, conflict resolution, behavior management, and more.

    COMMUNICATION

All programs are equipped with tablets, giving leaders access to our logistics, maps, manuals, policies, procedures, and a wealth of information for the successful operation of programs.  RLT directors are available to our leaders for support anytime day or night.  The RLT Office staff is committed to providing parents with updates every few days through trip photos, email updates, and phone calls.

     UNPLUGGED

All Road Less Traveled participants set aside their cell phones and other electronics during their program.  Being tech-free empowers our students to focus on face-to-face connections and build meaningful relationships.  Without a screen as a barrier, our travelers learn to take in and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.
