Overview

At Tamarack Farm, teens are given the guidance and freedom to build their own community, through working together, talking together, and playing together. Campers and staff together maintain a small farm, and purposefully focus on building an inclusive, participatory community.

Tamarack Farmers live in lakeside, open-air cabins with up to nine other campers of the same sex. Each day, some campers rise early for barn chores. After breakfast and Silent Meeting, its off to work for the rest of the morning. Morning work projects may include gardening, cooking the days meals, putting siding on a building or working at the Barn Day Camp as a counselor assistant. In the afternoon, campers choose from offered activities, which might include arts & crafts projects such as pottery or silk screening, sports, animal care, baking, canning, canoeing, creative writing, or carpentry. During one week, the entire camp leaves on long trips of rock climbing, service, canoeing, or hiking. Community discussions are a central aspect to Farm life and can occur at the consensus-based Town Meeting or other regular forums. As the summer progresses, campers take significant responsibility in vital camp operations.
