In this Syracuse University Summer College program, high school students will venture through the US legal system, explore fundamentals of law through the contemporary lens of Internet technology (including social media and other content-sharing applications), and examine emerging law and ethical considerations related to these technologies.
All programs and courses are college-level and led by Syracuse University faculty and instructors. Our 2-week noncredit Law programs run from June 30 through August 10. Field trips and activities on campus give students the opportunity to relax, have fun, and make new friends.
Residential students stay in a university residence hall and eat in a university dining hall. Students also have access to all of Syracuse University’s facilities, which include the library, recreation centers, and student centers. Room and board are included in the overnight summer program costs.
Students in Introduction to Cyber Law will venture through the US legal system, explore fundamentals of law through the contemporary lens of Internet technology, including social media and other content-sharing applications, and examine emerging law and ethical considerations related to these technologies. Students will also learn to identify and analyze legal issues by studying recent case law and will practice these skills by dissecting publicly controverted, yet-to-be decided scenarios. Legal battles that start in cyberspace may end in physical space courtrooms and, as part of this course, students will personally experience local courtrooms and professionals who practice in them.
The Criminal and Corporate Law program provides a whirlwind survey of criminal law and procedure and corporate law. While exploring criminal law, students will track what happens from apprehension and arrest to due process and sentencing, exploring the policies and participants in modern criminal law. In corporate law, students will dedicate their time to hands-on areas such as Business Formation, Wills & Estates, Real Estate, and Contracts. A field trip to the court each week are the highlights of the summer program.
