STEM Research Experience Overview
CU-Boulder faculty and graduate students mentor students in this non-credit program. Each mentor works with 1-2 students, based on research interest. Students work 30-40 hours Monday-Friday on their research project. Work schedules may vary among different labs. Readings and assignments may be assigned prior to the start of the program.
In addition to furthering your STEM education this summer, get ready to discover Colorado’s endless opportunities for fun. Daily activities and weekend excursions like a trip to Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park, a visit to the red rock formations at Pike’s Peak and Colorado Springs and a hike or bike through Rocky Mountain National Park, to name a few, are included in your tuition.

Summer Discovery gave me a summer that I would never forget. The people I met were amazing and the experience I endured was so special. The education aspect of the program enables students to obtain knowledge not easily gained in a high school setting. As a result, students are supplied with knowledge to help benefit them in college. As well for college, Summer Discovery gives students the ability to prepare and excite themselves for the journey of their future. The values and memories both created and gained through this summer program are truly outstanding.
I have done two different Summer Discovery programs in the past summers. The first one I did was at the UCLA campus. Being a California native, I thought I had seen most of Los Angeles. However, Summer Discovery did an excellent job of creating awesome activities! Being on the UCLA campus, I really felt like a college student. We stayed in the dorms, which were awesome! We also had access to a lot of facilities, like a gym and a pool, which was fun since it was summer time. I had two classes each week day that I got to sign up for before the program started. Most of the classes were in the actual classrooms around the campus. My two classes were Phycology and Hospitality & Tourism. It was nice because we had minimal homework. It felt like more like a recreational class than what it feels like to go to school. My other experience I had with Summer Discovery was actually with their internship program called Discovery Internships. This was a totally different experience, yet I liked it just as much, if not more. The program I did was at Emerson College in Boston, MA. There were only about 40 kids doing internships, which made it really easy to be friends with everyone. I learned a lot about being in the work force, which is a skill I am really thankful I have now. Boston is an amazing city, and a place I had never been to before I did the internship program. Our dorm's were located in an awesome part of the city, and not to far from my job. I worked at Hostelling-International. I was an community and outreach ambassador. I was able to create a lot of tours for the hostel-visitors. I found a lot of ways to make the Hostel a more comfortable environment for the people staying there.
This was by far the most amazing summer of my life. It was an experience I never thought I would have and one I believe everyone should have as well. I met so many friends from around the world that I will always keep in touch with. This program gave me opportunities I am so thankful for; ones I would have never tried if it wasn't for this program. I became so independent and feel changed as a person.
