Rowan University: C.H.A.M.P./Gear Up Summer Program

Overview

C.H.A.M.P./Gear Up is a pre-college program designed to encourage and support 7th-12th grade students to improve their performance in school and prepare to attend college, by providing mentoring, tutoring, counseling, trips and various enrichment activities. 

The Creating Higher Aspirations & Motivation Project/Gaining Early Awareness for Undergraduate Programs (C.H.A.M.P./Gear Up) is a pre-college program funded in part by Rowan University, The New Jersey Higher Education, The U.S. Department of Education, and The Camden City Board of Education.

Curriculum includes:

  • Math
  • Writing
  • Public Speaking
  • Computer Technology
  • Educational Workshops
  • Environmental Science
  • Career Development Academic and Social Activities

Additional notes about the program:

  • The program runs Monday-Thursday 
  • Transportation provided 
  • Meals provided 
  • Mandatory parent/student orientation in June 
  • Six weeks participation is mandatory 
  • A stipend will be provided upon successful completion of the program

Cost and Session Information

Junior C.H.A.M.P. includes 45 6th & 7th Grade students from R.T. Cream, Cooper’s Poynt and Creative Arts-Morgan Village Academy in Camden. The summer program is designed to acquaint students with natural and environmental studies, as well as, increase their skills in math, science, writing, public speaking and computer literacy.

Senior C.H.A.M.P. includes 120 Camden City public school students from Camden High, Woodrow Wilson High, Creative Arts-Morgan Village Academy, Charles E. Brimm Medical Arts High, and Met East High School who have completed grades 8th, 9th, 10th, or 11th Grades. The summer program is designed to acquaint students with natural and environmental studies, as well as, increase their skills in Math, Science, English, and Computer Literacy.

Residential Senior C.H.A.M.P. includes 30 Camden City students who have completed grades 10th or 11th. The summer program is designed to acquaint students with campus life as well as increase their skills in Math, Science, English,and Computer Literacy.

Academic and Social Activities The program runs Monday-Thursday Transportation provided Meals provided Mandatory parent/student orientation in June Six weeks participation is mandatory A stipend will be provided upon successful completion of the program.
