OVERVIEW

Our Barcelona Campus

Join us at  a private residence hall in the popular Raval district of the Gothic Quarters and a short walk from the beach. With a distinct regional character, Barcelona is known for its unique blend of pragmatism, style, flair, and civic-mindedness. Europe’s largest city on the Mediterranean is a cosmopolitan gem. Starting on the beach boardwalks of the Barceloneta, walk the narrow, lantern-lined streets of the Barrio Gótico, through the brilliant colors and riotous noises of the flower and bird kiosks on the pedestrian Ramblas. Sit and enjoy a traditional pan amb tumaquets breakfast in front of the undulating, shimmering façade of Gaudí’s Battló House. The Picasso Museum, Museum of Modern Art, the Sagrada Familia cathedral, and the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic all serve as invigorating open-air classrooms.

Choose One Seminar

Get an in-depth view of the city  of Barcelona and the surrounding area through the lens of your chosen seminar. This seminar, capped at ten students, encourages hands-on, place-based, collaborative learning. Walk the Ramblas to photograph vibrant street performers. Interview young Spaniards about Catalán music, or head to the the Museu de la Xocolata for a hands-on lesson in chocolate making. Take a scenic drive out to Girona or Besalú for a day of hiking and exploring the quiet cobblestone streets. Experience the wild and surreal works of Salvador Dalí in his hometown of Figueres.

Afternoons, Evenings, and Excursions

Relax, have fun, explore subjects outside of your seminar and take advantage of afternoon activities and workshops. Rent bikes and ride through the beautiful Parc de la Ciutadella, or take in a film at an open-air cinema. Enjoy the panoramic views from the balcony at Parc Güell, take a trip to the Fundación Miró and head to the beach to relax, swim, or kayak. Find a hidden café for a tertulia, or Spanish conversation hour. Gather with your whole group for a daily community meeting before dinner and then venture out in the company of your instructors to see classical guitar concert, go on a search for the best tapas in town,, or enjoy your fellow students’ and leaders’ performances at an in-house variety show.

Explore Catalonia on day trips to Tossa del Mar and smaller towns such as Banyoles or Montserrat. Investigate the medieval ruins and crystal blue waters of Tossa del Mar, one of the small cities that dots Spain’s Mediterranean coastline. Venture to the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees to hike, play soccer with Spaniards, discover local specialty dishes, and get a taste for village life.

Final Presentations

On the final night, you and your seminar prepare a culminating presentation for the whole group to showcase to your fellow students the best of what you have learned. Design a Gaudí-inspired facade, produce a tapas cookbook, or set up a photo gallery.
