Situated in the Andes mountains, Cusco, the former imperial capital of the Inca Empire, is surrounded by many historic pre-Columbian sites including the ruins of Sacsayhuamán and the lost city of Machu Picchu. For this reason it is known as the Archaeological Capital of the Americas. The Spaniards conquered Cusco in the 16th century, preserving its basic structure but building Baroque churches and palaces over the ruins. Cusco has special weather due to its high altitude as well as its closeness to the equator; the average high during July is around 70°F. The city attracts visitors from across the globe due to its rare combinations of indigenous and modern beauty.
