SchoolYear60™ Internship Program

Our SchoolYear60™ internship program, also for high school juniors, seniors, and college students, is designed to provide students with a minimum of 60 internship hours over several weeks during the school year–generally 6 hours per week for 10 weeks.

Eligibility

Students must be passionate about exploring a career area. A successful internship requires maturity, motivation, and responsibility. Students who demonstrate these attributes are able to maximize their success in our program.

To apply to our Summer60 program, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Have successfully completed at least 2 years of high school
  • Have reliable transportation (personal vehicle or public transit)
  • Present themselves in a professional manner in accordance with workplace policies and expectations.

Initial Screening

Once an application has been accepted, a student is assigned to an Internship Coach, who will contact the student within seven business days to schedule an initial screening interview to take place either in person or via Skype. During this screening, the Intern Coach and student will review the program requirements, the student’s first and second careers of interest, location preferences, and schedule availability.

Placement

Over the next 90 days, Internship coaches will work diligently to find the optimal internship placement for the student. Once a match is determined, the student’s Internship Coach will provide information and instructions to the student to arrange an interview directly with a representative from the sponsoring organization. Students are required to make this contact within one business day and arrange an in-person and/or Skype interview within 3 to 5 business days or at the interviewer's discretion.

Interview Preparation

Students are expected to prepare for their internship interview. Students will:

  • Research the hosting company thoroughly
  • Prepare 2 to 3 questions for the interview
  • Bring a clean copy of their resume to their interview

Additionally, the student’s Internship Coach will prepare students in interview techniques and conduct mock interviews with students either in person or via Skype.

Student Internship Work Schedule

Students must be able to provide at least 60 hours during the summer and commit to 15 hours per week over four consecutive weeks.

Internship Educational Requirements

Students will be assigned a Google Docs folder at the beginning of the internship placement process. Each student’s folder contains necessary or required documents.

Throughout their internship, all students are required to complete the following assignments:

Internship Journals

Four internship journals, each submitted upon completing 15 internship hours. These journal assignments prompt students to write about their internship experience. Internship journals help Coaches stay informed and monitor student progress.

Internship Project

Students must complete a short project that pertains to their internship. The following are examples of internship projects:

  • Short, written interview with a person from at the sponsoring organization
  • Newspaper article or newsletter
  • PowerPoint presentation
  • Two-minute video or podcast
