Volunteer abroad with Greenheart Travel and gain valuable international experience and earn service learning hours while traveling for a change. We offer two environmentally focused volunteer programs in Costa Rica and Sri Lanka for teens and student groups.
Volunteer in Costa Rica at an Animal Rescue Center
As a volunteer, you will get to work with kinkajous, toucans, macaws, parrots, peccaries and monkeys, and discover why this reserve is so important for both the animals and the community.
Why the Project Needs You:
The rescue center has grown tremendously in recent years, and more and more animals get dropped off at the center every day for rehabilitation. Without your help as a volunteer, there would not be enough hands to feed the animals, build and clean the cages, or connect with the local community through outreach.
Student volunteer groups are accepted on this program!
How You Will Make a Difference:
- Help feed, observe and administer general care to animals
- Assist with various conservation projects
- Work in the greenhouse
- Help maintain trails on the reserve
- Help with construction of new habitats for the animals
- Assist with community outreach projects in the area
“Costa Rica was amazing. I was amazed how much Spanish I learned. I love working outside since I live in the middle of the woods, so working with the animals was pretty cool. The family had a beautiful pond back in the jungle that we spent the weekends at just relaxing. Thank you so much for putting this together.” – William, Greenheart Travel Volunteer alumn in Costa Rica
Volunteer in Sri Lanka with Elephant Conservation Efforts
Spend a summer holiday working to save elephants and villagers’ livelihoods by helping to resolve human-elephant conflicts in Wasgamuwa National Park, a vast and diverse wilderness area in North Central Sri Lanka.
What are past participants saying about the program?
“Volunteering in Sri Lanka was in every way an amazing experience. The location is beautiful and you really have the opportunity to be immersed in the culture. The staff on the project was incredible. They were friendly, caring and they had a great sense of humor. There’s not a single bad thing I have to say about my time in Sri Lanka. It was a total life changing experience and a lot of what I learned I will always carry with me. All I can say is how grateful I am that I could have this experience.” — Shannon Elder, Greenheart Travel Sri Lanka Volunteer Alumna
