A tradition since 1919, Exeter Summer has grown to welcome approximately 750 students from more than 40 states and 50 countries each summer. Our UPPER SCHOOL offers programs of study for high school students who have completed grades 9-12. Students take 3 classes plus a sport and optional SAT preparation.
During the program’s five weeks of academic study, athletics, and personal exploration, you will experience the student-centered learning style we call Harkness.
The diversity of our students and faculty combines with the Academy’s friendly atmosphere to create an environment that will encourage you to undertake new challenges. Living within an academic community fosters curiosity and collaboration. The opportunity to experience residential dormitory life away from home will prepare you in significant ways for attending a boarding school or college in the future.

This is a great experience where you get the chance to meet new people with different backgrounds and make new friends which you get close to and become like a family. In addition, you learn a lot about different things depending on what classes you get. Their way of teaching is different from how most schools teach but with this method, every student gets engaged and actually learns. I really recommend this program, I was there in 2013 and I really enjoyed it!
Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School was the best experience I have ever had. I got to make so many new friends from all over the country and I will always remind in touch with them. I have gone for the past three summers and each year has been very different, but tons of fun. Exeter Summer School is a great opportunity for everyone. You learn so much and make incredible friends and learn about many new cultures. I got to take classes that my shook does not offer which was cool and I learned many new things. I will always remember my summers at Phillips Exeter Summer School.
The first year my daughter first enrolled at Exeter Summer School it was in the Access CSI program. She had and outstanding experience! She returned to Exeter for the Upper School summer program and again could not have been happier. As a parent I value tremendously the overall experience Exeter provided. There are few opportunities in a teenager’s life to engage academically, athletically, artistically, and socially, with students from all over the globe. My daughter has friends from Europe to Africa, South America to Asia, and all across the United States! What an amazing experience!
I had a wonderful time at Phillips Exeter Academy this past summer (2013). Coming from California, I was apprehensive about being away from home and not knowing anybody. The teachers, dorm heads, staff, and all the other students made New Hampshire feel like home! I was able to study using a new style of teaching (Harkness method) where I felt like I had a hand in the learning experience. What a great place to spend 5 weeks in the summer. I hope to come back again this coming up summer.
I have been in math education for over 20 years in Southern California at a high performing high school (over 925 API). In the summer of 2013, I had the opportunity to work at Phillips Exeter Academy and experience the Harkness method of teaching. The atmosphere and student centered learning that Harkness prescribes is incredible! In five weeks as a teacher, I learned more at Exeter than the previous 15 years by going to conferences dedicated to teaching teachers. This school year, I have already implemented several of the ideas at my home school. Also, the entire staff is dedicated to helping the students experience a high academic learning environment, while enjoying themselves with all the excursions that are planned. I hope I have the chance to work at Phillips Exeter Academy again.
What a wonderful program! My Daughter took the CSI cluster and had a great time learning digital photography, forensic science, and detective fiction. It's a unique opportunity for kids to take cross-curricular offerings they might not have a chance to take during their regular school years. I highly recommend it.
